8 Golden Rules of Health & Wellness

In my many years as a student, teacher, and practitioner of fitness, I’ve observed countless methods to achieve ideal fitness. Across all the different approaches I’ve seen, I’ve developed a list of 8 undeniable necessities to incorporate into your lifestyle that will guarantee improvement of not only physical health, but mental and social health as well. Without further ado, here are my 8 Golden Rules of Health & Wellness.

  1. Don’t Overeat

Our bodies are only meant to process a certain amount of food. Eating too much, even if you’re eating healthy, means our bodies are forced to find room for nutrients when there isn’t any. Try drinking a glass of water before eating to reduce hunger.

  2. Eat Mostly Whole Foods

The food we eat dictates how well our body functions, so we want to make sure that we’re fueling ourselves with the highest quality. Most often, we can rely on whole foods for good quality - that means lots of organic fruits and vegetables.

  3. Drink Water

Certainly no surprise, but worth reiterating that water is the most essential component for our bodies and mind to run smoothly. Carry a water bottle with you as a reminder, and make sure you hydrate whenever you exercise.

  4. Move. Every. Day.

There is no “off-day”. The only surefire way to keep your body in shape is to keep it moving. This can be done as thoroughly as stretching, as intensely as running, or as simply as walking.

  5. Lift Heavy Things Once In a While

Give yourself a challenge now and then. Your muscles are waiting to be put to use on some heavy weight. By pushing your limits, your limits will change.

  6. Sleep Well

    Sleep is restorative; it

  7. Manage Stress

Stress is inevitable, make sure that you’re giving it the attention it deserves. Acknowledge the stressors in your life, and take time to check in on yourself in whatever way works for you.

  8. Be a Good Friend

It’s the Golden Rule: Treat others how you ought to be treated. You’d be surprised at how being kind can improve your overall mood.
